Overview of the complete Tour Track googleplus |
Motorbike: Honda CRF 250ccm
Season: End of November. No rain, in the evening cold
and partially in the morning foggy and wet.
Way of Travel: On my own
Motorbike: Honda CRF 250ccm
Start/End: Luang Prabang
Road Map: Map of
Laos
| publisher: Reise Know How
GPS
device: Garmin 6CSX
Map
sources for GPS device:
- Micro SD card from local motorbike rental shop (very helpful, with
guesthouses etc.).
- I used Google Earth and transferred the way points (coordinates) via PC
to the device.
Info map/GPS:
Map: You
will not find a map that is perfect up to date.
GPS
resources: Only “open sources” maps available. Local rental shops do provide
good maps for the device. http://www.laosgpsmap.com/
Information source:
- Other
Blogs with information provided by enthusiast motorcycle or bike travellers.
Planning tour:
- Internet
(blogs, reports…)
- Motorbike
rental shop (http://www.remoteasia.com)
- Road map
- Travel
Guide: Lonely Planet (not very helpful for Motorbike tour only for backpacker
“hotspots”).
My biggest mistake on that tour:
I took over
the bike with a rear wheel tire almost worn down more than 40%. I regretted it
then very… three punctures during the trip…nail small aluminium key, sharp
stones…
Time needed
for tube change: 60-90 min depends on location and if it must be done alone or
with local support.
“Small” aids I always take with me on a tour:
- Leukotape
(waterproof, skin-friendly, “tapes” almost everything)
-
Multi-tool
- Rain cover
jacket (light, small, good for rain, wind, cold foggy weather..)
- Small
first aid kit (including eye drops)
- Motocross
google
- Scarf
(dust, cold wind..)
- Local SIM
Card with number from Motorbike Rental Shop for back-up
- Torch
- Water
& food (like a tuna can in case of breakdown)
Recommended:
- Start
your daily tour early and end the tour early (around 4pm).
- You will
not meet a lot of travellers away from the Backpacker “hot spots” like Van
Vieng.
If you are not a person who can/like to stay alone for a day or two try to find a travel buddy.
